HIGHLIGHT
Portland alt-punk trio theWorst just dropped a slab of cathartic musique concrète on our collective heads. Their new four-song EP, Quiet the Gods, is technically not a field recording in that avant-garde compositional style, but it certainly captures the raw rage presently sweeping large swaths of the nation.
Fronted by singer/guitarist and lyricist Brooke Binion, with Will Bradford (SeepeopleS) on bass and Craig Sala (Paranoid Social Club) drumming, theWorst have two LPs under their belt that display their versatility within the punk genre, and this release is no exception. The opening title track is a melodic ballad lifted to ragged heights of glory by Binion’s scratchily evocative vocals. “Last Pill” dares to be slam-danceable, and it works, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the ripper “Blacksheepish” that launched 2022’s Yes Regrets.
“I'm way past catching my breath now / skin of my teeth and I'm starving to death,” Binion snarls on the sludgy “Nothing for Nothing.” “How dare you trade me nothing for nothing?” Yup. And “Hackles,” the first single, provides the appropriate punctuation to end this EP: !!!
